One Month Down

I´ve been in my site for just about a month and have had quite an experience. After 3 months of Peace Corps training, it´s been a nice change of pace and there´s been a lot of freedom to do and learn whatever I want. I´m living in an Embera Community a couple hours outside of Panama City and it´s a completely different world. I´m a boat ride away from a typical Panamanian town and although it´s close, it´s very different. There are about 100 people in my community, so it´s small and I´ve already gotten to know the majority of the people. There´s no electricity, flushing toilets and we use water from a nearby waterfall.
It´s been an adjustment, but I´m starting to call my site home. We´ve been busy participating in various tourism seminars and just recently had an event with about 100 visitors from different international agencies. It was great to be involved and help out as needed and to see my community in action. There´s a lot of work to be done, which is definitely something I´m looking forward to. After all, that is what I came here to do. I feel lucky to have been placed in a site with some of the hardest working people I´ve met in my life.
